It is used in the forging process to deliver blows to a forging or strike other forging tools. There are many variations of the cross peen hammer. There are also strait peen hammers and diagonal peen hammers that are also used by smiths. The peen end of the hammer is used for spreading metal in a perpendicular direction to the peen of the hammer.
