It gathered together the Radical Party, the Socialist Party, the Communist Party, the Democratic Party and the Radical Socialist Party, as well as organizations such as the Confederación de Trabajadores de Chile (CTCH) trade-union, the Mapuche movement which unified itself in the Frente Único Araucano, and the feminist Movimiento Pro-Emancipación de las Mujeres de Chile (MEMCh).

Das Bündnis der - trotz ihres Namens - bürgerlichen Partido Radical (Radikale Partei) und der beiden Arbeiterparteien Partido Socialista (Sozialistische Partei) und Partido Comunista (Kommunistische Partei) war 1936 gegründet worden und zerbrach formell bereits 1941. Allerdings regierten radikale Präsidenten mit Unterstützung der Linksparteien bis 1952 weiter. Jahrzehnte später bildete sich das Linksbündnis Unidad Popular, das ebenfalls gelegentlich als Volksfront bezeichnet wird. Allerdings unterscheiden sich die Frente von 1936 und die UP deutlich voneinander.
