The pagoda is small in size, and is widely believed to have been built in the 200s by King Pyusawhti. However, its architectural style indicates that Bupaya Pagoda may have been built in the 1000s. Bupaya Pagoda is noted for its roundness. The pagoda once had a white-painted base; atop the base is a traditional Burmese zedi, which is adorned with gold leaf. Today, the entirety of the pagoda is adorned with gold leaf.
